Amtrak's First Conductor

It's 1971 and Amtrak is in the process of taking over the responsibility of operating most of the country's passenger trains from the freight railroads. The only major railroads that stayed out of "Railpax" were the Southern Railway, Rock Island and the Denver and Rio Grande Western.

Amtrak introduced its' new service with new uniforms for train crew members. In the photo above we see Penn Central Conductor Ed Motte modeling Amtrak's version of a conductor's uniform. Imagine having all that hardware hanging from you?

Ed Motte was the father of Boston Conductor Joe Motte.
